Every month will be spotlighting salons across the US. This month we interviewed Mike Yang Co-owner of Westside Hair - Glendale, CA & 1st place winner of July 2010 photo contest. 
 
1. How did you get started in the beauty industry?
My wife Kyung-Hee is a licensed cosmetologist and has been 7 years, and she wanted to have her own place.
 
2. What inspires you to go to work everyday?
She goes to work every day to fulfill her dream in having successful salon
 
3. What do you think makes a salon successful?
A: Location, Location, Location.
    - Good clean facility with comfortable furniture and equipments.
B: Service, Service, Service.
    - Having very skillful professional employees.
 
4. What sets your salon apart from others?
Our store is located at the corner of streets for a great exposure, and also we are having the light turned-on for all night to show the public our beautiful facility.Most impotently that we are different than others is " WE DO NOT HAVE ANY POSTERS " of hair samples or models on the walls and windows, and we will not have those at all in the future.

5. Do you have any advice for stylists thinking about opening their own salon?
To have a good staff of people and make sure your clients are happy.  Happy clients mean return clients equal to money.

I had my cosmetology license years ago but recently got back into and took up more education in the “holistic” skin care school and got my esthetician license in Portland.  After subleasing a room to do my esthetic work at small salon, I decided to open up my own SALON & SPA.

To grow my business and take care of my staff.
 
3. What do you think makes a salon successful?
Return clients means happy clients.
 
4. What inspired the look of your salon?
I travel to a lot of different states and country and get ideas from different salon and spas.  I combine the best ideas from these places and apply them to my idea salon spa!

5. Do you have any advice for stylists thinking about opening their own salon?

1. How did you get started in the beauty industry?
We started in the beauty industry about 10 years ago with one location, then a second and so on. Throughout the years we have developed our own name, including our own line of hair products.

2. What inspires you to go to work everyday?
What inspires us to go to work everyday is creating new styles and looks. Been able to see clients walk out with a smile on their face.

3. What do you think makes a salon successful?
What makes a salon successful is understanding your client needs and always giving a 100% satisfaction to your clients.

4. Do you have any advice for cosmetology students/recent graduates starting out in the salon industry?
"The best way to get experience and knowledge is hands-on"

CCI asked "How promote salon during Holidays?". Here are a few responses.
 
Each Year at  John Douglas Salon/Day Spa, We host a client appreciation night . We treat the client to some complimentary services such as makeup application, fast and easy party up dos. We cater the event with wonderful food and drinks. We also offer an entry in our drawing for toys for tots when the client brings in an unwrapped toy, they are automatically entered in our 500.00 skin care drawing. Clients really enjoy this and tell there friends about us.

I find the best way of promoting your salon during the holidays is a friendly gesture of thanking your client with a beautiful pocket calendar with your salon name, address and phone number on it. This way your client can keep track of his/her appointments with you as well as other appointments. My clients look forward to this every year and it is amazing how many other people notice where it came from when the client uses it.
